How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Pet Photography Session

You’ve booked your session—woohoo! Now it’s time to get excited, prep a little, and start imagining how incredible your pet’s portraits will look on your walls.

Whether we’re meeting at your favorite park or a scenic trail in the DMV, outdoor sessions are designed to capture your pet’s personality in their element—with gorgeous natural light, earthy textures, and room to explore.

This guide will help you prepare for the big day and give you some inspiration for how your images can turn into stunning artwork for your home.

What to Expect During the Session

First things first: your pet doesn’t have to behave perfectly. Seriously.

Outdoor sessions are pet-led, flexible, and all about making your furry friend feel comfortable. We always begin with a familiarity and exploration phase, where your pet gets to sniff around, get comfortable, and check me out while I keep the camera down.

Then we ease into photos with short bursts—just a few minutes at a time—at one beautiful scene. After that, we reset, walk to a new location, and repeat. We typically photograph across 2–4 different scenes, with plenty of breaks and positive reinforcement along the way.

Session Day Tips

  • Bring your pup on a leash

  • Pack favorite treats and a toy or squeaker they love, I’ll also bring mine!

  • Dress comfortably—we might go down a trail to get that perfect shot. Don’t worry, I’ll do all the climbing and river crossing!

  • Don’t stress—we’re here to have fun, not win Best in Show

  • Brave cats are welcome too—and they’ve been known to rock the trail!

📸 Thinking About Jumping Into a Few Photos? Yes, Please!

Even if the focus is on your pet, I always encourage pet parents to step in for a few moments. Whether it’s a cuddle, kiss, walk, or shared glance, these photos are some of the most meaningful.

Here are a few simple tips if you’re planning to be in the frame:

  • Stick with soft, solid colors. Neutrals, earth tones, or muted hues tend to photograph beautifully and won’t pull focus from your pet.

  • Avoid bold logos or busy patterns. These can distract from the emotion of the image.

  • Dress comfortably. We might be crouching, kneeling, or walking through grass—so wear something you can move in.

  • Coordinate, don’t match. If multiple people are coming, aim for complementary tones instead of full-on matching outfits.

  • Layers work wonders. A light jacket, cozy sweater, or scarf can add visual interest and movement.

Above all—wear something you feel good in. The goal is to feel relaxed and enjoy the moment with your pet.

Dreaming of Wall Art: Where Will Your Pet’s Portraits Go?

As you prep for your session, it’s the perfect time to imagine where your pet’s portraits could live in your home. Here are some favorite spots:

Above the Couch

This is a classic statement piece location—perfect for a single bold portrait or a panoramic running shot. Think big and bold, like a 30x40 or 40x60 acrylic piece.

Stairway or Landing Walls

These transitional spaces are perfect for a storytelling gallery—three or more images arranged in a row or a fun cluster to show off your pet’s range of expressions.

Unsightly Pillars or Narrow Wall Spaces

Got an awkward wall, pillar, or hallway nook? Turn it into a showstopper. A single vertical piece can add warmth and personality without overwhelming the space.

Entryways and Mudrooms

What better greeting than your dog’s goofy grin? Entryways and mudrooms are ideal for uplifting portraits that welcome you home.

Don’t Worry About Deciding Now

You don’t have to know exactly what you want yet. After your session, we’ll meet for an in-home ordering appointment where I’ll show you your images, walk you through product options, and help visualize how each piece would look in your home.

Let’s Make This an Experience You’ll Never Forget

This is more than a photo shoot—it’s a celebration of your bond with your pet. We’ll take our time, keep it stress-free, and capture images that bring you joy every single day.
